Click on the thumbnails to see a larger version of
the image. The miniature on the left is a normal Disc of Tzeentch
rider, the one on the right is my conversion. Apols for the bad
scanning. Much ta's go to GrafDeimos@aol.com,
who provided the ideas for the conversion. |
Materials Needed
1 Miniature of your choice- I used a Warhammer Quest Warrior Priest
A circle of card, diamater 2-3 times that of a flying base
2 flying bases, 2 transparent stick things
Paints, superglue, PVA glue, flock, filler, blu-tak (trust me on this)
Something to hold the flying bit up- I used a Pencil Refill Thingy (you
know, for the pencils that extend lead when you press the button)
Assorted things from the Bitz Box to go on the base.
Simple Inst-er-uk-shuns
1. Preparation
Cut the metal tab from the bottom of the miniature and unbase it if
necessary. Glue both flying bases to the transparent stick things, then
snap or cut one off flush with the base (we'll call this Base 1), and the
other with 0.5cm to 1cm of plastic sticking out (we'll call this Base 2).
Superglue some blu-tak (I know, it sounds stupid, but trust me) to Base 1,
then superglue the pencil refill case open-end up to the blu-tak: the
blu-tak holds it in place. Next, superglue Base 1 to the centre of the
circle of card. The miniature will be fairly tall and heavy, so we need an
extra-large base.
2. Working
Using the filler, create an "enlarged flying base" effect on
Base 1, which if you will recall has been stuck to the card. Stick various
things in the filler to make it look toy. You should now have what looks
like a large flying base, with a pencil refill case sticking out- the
blu-tak should be well-buried under filler. Wait for the filler to dry
completely, then undercoat that whole bit (Bit 1).
To make Bit 2, glue the miniature to the flat side of
Base 2. If you've done really well, you should be able to balance it, but
if you haven't, who cares. Undercoat Bit 2.
3. Painting & Assembly
Paint & flock the base, and paint the miniature in colours of your
choice. Make sure the disc looks cool. To hold the miniature atop the
flying stand, simply slot it into the open top of the pencil refill case-
it should fit, if it doesn't stick it in with superglue and blu-tak.
Ta-da.
4. Cunning things
At some point in the future, I'm going to disguise the sticky-up bit as
a tree... you could make it a power pylon, or something similar, for 40K
if you wanted.
